Success@Arithmetic™

Success@Arithmetic™ works. Pupils can make four times the expected rate of progress.

Success@Arithmetic™ has been developed by Edge Hill University under the Every Child Counts (ECC) initiative. School Improvement Liverpool are an ECC accredited provider, who train a lead teacher and a teaching assistant (TA) to deliver the course to support pupils who were previously assessed at about National Curriculum Level 2A-3C.

It is a ‘light touch’ intervention, with the teacher and TA working in partnership to support Year 5 pupils who have difficulties with arithmetic. Working together, they can raise pupils’ attainment and develop their understanding, fluency and confidence in written calculation.

Success@Arithmetic™ helps pupils make faster progress and to catch up with their peers. There are two programmes:

1) Success@Arithmetic: Number Sense is a small-group intervention delivered by a teacher and teaching assistant in partnership to pupils in Year 3-5 who need support to understand the number system and develop fluency with number facts. The teacher assesses the children, devises an individual learning plan and the TA then delivers the 40 minute sessions at least three times a week.

2) Success@Arithmetic: Calculation is a small-group intervention delivered by a teacher and teaching assistant in partnership to pupils in Year 5 or 6 who need support with written arithmetic. The teacher assesses the children, devises an individual learning plan and the TA then delivers the 40 minute sessions at least three times a week.
