School Collaboration

In 2006 the NCSL (National College of School Leadership) commissioned a report into the effectiveness of using collaboration as a strategy for improving schools. The report identified that strong collaboration can widen opportunities and help address vulnerable groups of learners. There was also strong evidence to support the positive impact on pupil’s attainment, achievement and engagement in some groups of schools.

The key point was that impact was only seen in some schools. The NCSL found that ‘…collaboration is not always a straightforward option that can be easily introduced.’ Collaboration flourishes in certain conditions, and these need to be carefully fostered.
Over the past several years Learning Networks within Liverpool have flourished and network member schools have worked closely and successfully together, whilst being supported by School Improvement Liverpool.

The aims of the networks include:
  • Raising the standards of teaching and learning
  • Provide strategic management and leadership support for Headteachers and Leaders
  • Develop a joint CPD plan for network schools to address training and development needs involving groups of school in the network
  • Foster collaborative links between schools
  • Facilitate the sharing of good practice
  • Keep up to date with national standards and areas of educational development and improvement
