The Council Health and Safety Unit

The Council Health and Safety Unit are committed to improving health & safety within schools by finding solutions that meet your needs and supporting you in fulfilling your legal responsibilities.
Our Unit has detailed knowledge of legislative requirements and recognised best practice within education. We can also respond quickly should a serious incident occur.
We offer:

  • Bespoke advice on tailoring risk assessments to meet your site-specific requirements
  • Updates on legislative requirements and what they mean for your school
  • On-site audits of schools’ health and safety management system
  • Support with accident and incident investigation
  • Liaison with external authorities, including the HSE and Fire and rescue Service
  • Training and briefing opportunities for staff
All the Unit staff are Chartered Members of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health have significant experience of working with the education sector.

What to do if there's an accident, near miss or violent incident

Please also refer to the following guidance notes:

For accidents/near misses the Headteacher or nominated person should complete the online form within 24 hours of the incident. 

Report a violent incident here 

The reporting procedure applies to both council employees and non-employees (e.g. contractors, members of the public, pupils etc).  

Once you've filled in the report form, a copy is automatically sent to the Headteacher, Health and Safety Unit and trade union (if RIDDOR and requested). 

If the incident also needs to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), as required under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations RIDDOR, please complete the relevant form on the HSE's site at http://www.hse.gov.uk/riddor/online.htm

When reporting under RIDDOR, please also provide the Health and Safety Unit with a copy of the report form and reference number.

Health & Safety Newsletter

The Health & Safety Unit produce a biannual newsletter for schools - the Spring / Summer 2016 edition is now available to download.

This edition includes:

Health & Safety training for schools

Training courses available specifically for Liverpool schools; developed and delivered by the Council Health and Safety Unit to assist schools in meeting their legal responsibilities and achieving best practice within health and safety management.

Most of the courses are half day in duration, aimed at providing the appropriate level of information whilst causing minimum disruption to the running of your school.

Work at Height (Ladders & Stepladders) Wednesday 16th November 2016 @ 9am - 12pm
COSHH Friday 2nd December 2016 @ 9am - 12pm
H&S for HT's and Senior Leaders Tuesday 10th January 2017 @ 9am - 12pm
Fire Marshal and Extinguisher Use Thursday 9th February 2017 @ 9am - 12pm (the Epstein Centre)
Risk Assessment Friday 10th February 2017 @ 9am - 12pm
Accident Reporting & Investigation Wednesday 8th March @ 9am - 12pm
H&S Awareness in Premises Management Thursday 16th March 2017 @ 9am - 5pm
Fire Safety in Schools Tuesday 21st March @ 9am - 12pm
Stress Management in Schools Wednesday 7th June @ 9am - 12pm
H&S for Staff - Friday 14th October 2016 @ 9am - 12pm

In addition to all courses scheduled within the brochure the Unit can also deliver Fire Marshal and Fire Extinguisher training at your school.
All we require for this is you have at least 8 members of staff to participate and a suitable outdoor space for siting the demonstration equipment.
