1st Class@Number

A light-touch intervention for children who need a helping hand.

1stClass@Number has been developed by Edge Hill University under the Every Child Counts (ECC) initiative. School Improvement Liverpool are an ECC accredited provider, who train a Teaching Assistant (TA) to deliver the course to children who need further support with the Year 1 or Year 2 mathematics curriculum.

  • 1stClass@Number 1 is for children who need further support to meet Year 1 expectations
  • 1stClass@Number 2 is for children who need further support to meet Year 2 expectations

Every child has three 30-minute 1stClass@Number lessons per week for 12 – 15 weeks. These are delivered in a small group while continuing to take part in their normal class mathematics lessons.

The programme empowers TA's to help children to think and talk about their mathematics.

After 12 hours of group teaching in three months, children had made an average number age gain of 9.8 months.
